Abstract: 11 pages in length. Classified as a severe mental disorder recognized by such psychotic symptoms as thought disorder, hallucinations, delusions and paranoia, organic brain disease such as schizophrenia impairs virtually every aspect of one's ability to function normally within society. Treatment oftentimes includes a combination of medication, psychotherapy and social-vocational rehabilitation for the patient, as well as education and support for the surrounding family. Initially, however, antipsychotic (neuroleptic) drugs are prescribed as a means by which to begin treatment, with standard typical medications including haloperidol, chlorpromazine and thioridazine, and atypical agents including clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine and quetiapine. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
