Abstract: A 7 page discussion of thalassaemia, a family of genetically carried disorders which affect the body's ability to synthesize haemoglobin. Describes the physiological manifestations of the condition and identifies sickle cell anemia as one of the most prominent types. Discusses the protection which the disease offers against ultimately fatal bouts with malaria but concludes that there is still no clear in-vitro measure of protective immunity against malaria .
