Abstract: 15 pages in length. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) started on January 1, 1994. On this day the people of Chiapas Mexico had planned to celebrate its beginning. When they awoke that morning, however, "two thousand indigenous guerrillas had taken over four major county seats, including the colonial capital of San Cristobal de las Casas.
