Abstract: A 9 page paper discussing the history and current state of the health maintenance organization (HMO) portion of the health care industry and Kaiser Permanente. Founded in the 1930s for the employees of Kaiser Industries, Kaiser Permanente is one of the oldest of the HMOs and it claims it is the largest as well. With more than 8 million enrollees, it can claim 22 percent of the market. It has been subject to the wrenching changes ongoing within the industry, but its commitment to quality and excellence of care is in its favor. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
