Abstract: An 8 page paper discussing the social costs of artificially-induced multiple births. The likelihood of achieving a full term pregnancy decreases with increased numbers of fetuses, which translates to greater costs associated with birth and first-year support. Some of these children need lifetime support, but all are the center of educational and logistical problems that can have social effect. The technology allowing couples to avoid higher order multiple births, but many in fertility programs do not receive counseling in the options open to them. While those with children can sympathize with those desperately wanting to conceive, the current results of fertility drug use must be seen as being negative for society.
