Abstract: Speech is embedded within human activity, that is, the style and content of communication patterns is directly related to the context. In Languages and Their Speakers, edited by Timothy Shopen, the use of language and its relationship to the culture of origin is explored. John Haviland teaches the reader How to Talk to Your Brother-in-Law in Guugu Yimidhirr while E. L. Keenen and Elinor Ochs speak of Becoming Competent Speakers of Malagasy.
