Social Realism Of The 1960s: Its Influence Upon Contemporary Film/Filmmakers

Abstract: 8 pages in length. Richard Brooks and Ken Loach are but two directors from the 1960s who believed that Hollywood had an obligation to address social issues through the power of film. Such Brooks classics as "Elmer Gantry" and "The Professionals," along with Loach's "Poor Cow," speak to the notion of social realism and the impact it had upon a changing society. Indeed, these films individually represented a changing class-consciousness related to modifying economic and social conditions of the 1960s, yet they also set the precedence for the decades that followed.
