Abstract: A 7 page paper discussing the 1990s history of Japan's economy, including internal conditions and external events that combined to largely disable the economy in the final years of the 20th century. Much of the economy has recovered since the turn of the century, but there has been little relative overall improvement. Interest rates still are lower than those of any of the developed world, but the central bank has undergone long-overdue policy changes. The long-range outlook for Japan's economy is positive, but it still is struggling to regain its former vigor. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
