Abstract: 5 pages in length. The cast of characters in this particular case study included one-hundred ninety-three upper-middle-class suburban New Jersey elderly people who were suspected of reaching out to their physicians with minor and/or nonexistent medical problems as a means by which to obtain reassurance, support, and other socioemotional needs. A family practice residency program provided the foundation upon which the study was conducted, where faculty and residents provided medical services in two separate settings. This study sought to affirm the significant absence of social workers who can offer this emotional support, while leaving the medical doctors more readily available to treat those who were truly physical ill.
