Abstract: A 9 page paper discussing the greatly different routes that industrialization has taken in China and in the United States, to the point that only now is it reaching into the more remote regions of China. There are a litany of cultural and philosophical reasons for this difference between these two nations. The purpose here is to examine some of those reasons, which include facts of history and several cultural issues such as identity of place, perspective of time, availability of labor and the role of tradition in the two cultures as it existed a century ago.
