Abstract: A 5 page essay that reviews the contributions made by the Roman Empire, despite the flawed personalities of its emperors. In an analogy to 1998 politics, the paper argues that the Roman emperors helped recreate the world by building information highways, instigating systems of international diplomacy, and increasing trade, despite the despotism evident in its "benevolent" leadership. Three emperors are reviewed for their character, Caesar, Caligula and Domitian. Shakespeare's Claudius is also mentioned. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
