Abstract: This 6 page paper is a position paper. The writer argues against the idea that the family in America is not really changing, it is just the perception of family that is changing. Coontz argues that statistics can be used to give an impression of change, but that there are not really any more single parents and that the reason divide figures are higher is due to long life with marriages lasting forty years or more also higher. The writer argues that this is not totally correct, whilst some changes may be perception based, there are also other changes which cannot be avoided due to the impact of culture on the family and the way in which American culture is changing. The bibliography cites 6 sources.
