Hypnosis : Science Or Magic?

Abstract: A 31 page comprehensive essay on hypnotism that includes these subheadings: Introduction, Myths About Hypnosis, Brief History of Hypnosis, Theories of Hypnosis, What Happens in the Hypnotic State, Hypnosis in Medicine, and Conclusions. Hypnosis remains a topic of debate even after advanced imaging systems have shown there is a change in the brain when the person is in a hypnotic state. The writer discusses factors associated with hypnosis, what happens physically and psychologically, Coue's three laws of suggestion and the suspension of reality orientation. The writer also reports studies that have shown hypnosis is an effective method for pain management and reports other studies say otherwise. A number of medical studies involving the use of hypnosis are reported. The conclusion section summarizes the report and includes statements from journals regarding the efficacy of hypnosis.
