Abstract: 7 pages in length. The medical community has long been divided as to the role amyloid plaques play in the presence of Alzheimer's disease, with some stating without reservation that the "extracellular clumps of a protein fragment" (Beckman, 2004, p. 762) are the initial indicators of the disease, others argue they are the end result of other insidious events leading up to Alzheimer's. What both sides do agree upon, however, is that amyloid plaques are undeniably a tell-tale sign; it is the precise role they play that continues to baffle researchers. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
