Abstract: 3 pages in length. A common reaction when a homeless person is seen wandering the streets in disheveled clothing digging through garbage dumpsters is how mental illness must be the reason why. Little if any consideration is given to any one of a number of events that are capable of thrusting an otherwise civilized, upstanding citizen onto the streets. The most prominent roots of homelessness include the inability to secure affordable housing, job loss, finding a job, poverty, domestic abuse, natural disaster, injuries/health problems, drug abuse and mental illness. Conspicuously absent from this list is laziness, which While any single reason can be responsible for a person being homeless, oftentimes it is a combination of two or more that finally pulls the rug out from under a previously stable life.
